Packed for the Bahamas, Sailing to Mexico: Utopia of the Seas Swaps Nassau and CocoCay for Cozumel
/If you packed for the Bahamas this weekend, Royal Caribbean has a plot twist for you. Guests boarding Utopia of the Seas in Port Canaveral today, Monday, October 26, will not be sailing to Nassau or Perfect Day at CocoCay at all. Instead, the ship is heading more than 650 miles west to Cozumel, Mexico — and only for a short visit.
Royal Caribbean notified booked guests on Sunday, the day before embarkation, that a weather system expected to bring unfavorable conditions to the Bahamas had forced the change. In its place, the four-night sailing now features two sea days, with a single port call in Cozumel on Wednesday, October 28, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
To see how big a swap this is, look at the original plan. Tuesday was supposed to be Nassau, from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Wednesday was a sea day, and Thursday was the highlight for many guests: a full day at Perfect Day at CocoCay, Royal Caribbean's private island, from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. The ship would then return to Port Canaveral on Friday, October 30.
Under the revised itinerary, both Tuesday and Thursday become sea days. Departure from Port Canaveral at 4 p.m. today and the Friday return, at roughly 7 a.m., have not changed — only everything in between.
The reason is not a single storm, but a rough combination of conditions. The Bahamas Department of Meteorology has forecast near-gale to gale-force winds from Sunday through Tuesday, with marine hazards likely continuing into Wednesday and a risk of heavy rain and flash flooding. On top of that come king tides — the highest astronomical tides of the season — pushing water levels higher than usual and raising the risk of coastal flooding. Seas of 9 to 14 feet are expected in places, with Atlantic-facing conditions potentially higher. Docking a 5,668-guest Oasis-class ship at a private island pier in that kind of weather is exactly the sort of plan a captain should change.
There is some practical relief for guests. Any pre-paid shore excursions booked through Royal Caribbean for Nassau or Perfect Day at CocoCay will be automatically cancelled and refunded to onboard SeaPass accounts, so there is nothing guests need to chase down at the shore excursions desk on embarkation day.
This is also not Utopia's first trip to Mexico. The ship first visited Cozumel in May 2025 on a sailing away from her regular Bahamas routine, complete with a welcome ceremony and plaque presentation — so the port, at least, knows the ship well.
So how do you make the most of just five hours in Cozumel? Keep it simple and close. This is not the day for a long mainland excursion or an ambitious plan that depends on everything running on time. A beach club near the pier, a walk through San Miguel's waterfront and shops, or a single booked-through-the-ship excursion with a guaranteed return are the smart plays. Eat early, shop early, and be back well before the 3 p.m. departure — with such a short call, the ship is the destination for most of this cruise anyway. Fortunately, Utopia is built for exactly that, with enough pools, shows, restaurants and neighborhoods to fill two sea days easily.
The wider lesson applies to anyone sailing to the Bahamas in the next few days, on any line: keep notifications on, check your cruise line app before you leave for the port, and hold port-day plans loosely when fall weather turns. A Bahamas itinerary in October can become a Mexico itinerary overnight — and sometimes, with five sunny hours in Cozumel and a very big ship to enjoy, that trade is not a bad one at all.
